The equipment market in Tanzania
Tanzania has a large and growing equipment market, driven by gold mining around Lake Victoria, and by big infrastructure such as the new standard-gauge railway and the Julius Nyerere hydropower dam.
Farming is the largest employer and a big tractor market. Dar es Salaam's port also serves Zambia, DR Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Malawi.
Importing and registering equipment in Tanzania
Ports
Dar es Salaam is the main port and a gateway for landlocked neighbours; Tanga and Mtwara are smaller.
Certificate before shipping
Many imports need a Certificate of Conformity before shipment under the PVoC programme of TBS (Tanzania Bureau of Standards). Used goods are inspected before shipping.
Customs
Clearance is through the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA). Most importers use a licensed clearing agent.
Registering for road use
Machines used on public roads are registered with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA). Your dealer or a clearing agent can usually arrange this.
