The equipment market in Ethiopia

Main demand fromConstructionFarmingMining

Ethiopia has Africa's second-largest population, and roads, housing, industrial parks and dams such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam drive heavy equipment demand.

Farming employs most people and uses tractors and implements, and mining (gold, potash) is growing. Most dealers are in Addis Ababa with branches in regional cities.

Importing and registering equipment in Ethiopia

  1. Routes in

Ethiopia is landlocked. Almost all equipment comes through the port of Djibouti, then by the Addis Ababa–Djibouti railway or by road.

  2. Customs

Clearance is through the Ethiopian Customs Commission. Most importers use a licensed clearing agent.

  3. Foreign currency

Importers pay through a local bank, which handles the foreign currency. Ask your dealer how long this takes.

  4. Registering for road use

Machines used on public roads are registered with the regional transport bureau where the owner is based. Your dealer or a clearing agent can usually arrange this.

General guidance only. Rules change, so confirm with the official bodies or your clearing agent before you buy. Last checked October 2026.
