The equipment market in DR Congo
DR Congo is the world's largest cobalt producer and Africa's largest copper producer, and the Katanga mining region around Lubumbashi and Kolwezi is one of the continent's biggest markets for mining equipment.
Kinshasa, a city of more than 15 million people, drives construction demand. Because the country is so large, check that a dealer has support near your site.
Importing and registering equipment in DR Congo
Ports and corridors
Matadi and Boma serve Kinshasa and the west. Equipment for Katanga usually comes overland from Durban or Dar es Salaam through Zambia (Kasumbalesa border), or via the Lobito corridor through Angola.
Cargo tracking note
Sea shipments need a cargo tracking note (FERI) issued before loading. Your freight forwarder normally arranges it.
Customs
Clearance is through the DGDA (Direction Générale des Douanes et Accises); goods are also inspected by the OCC (Office Congolais de Contrôle). Most importers use a licensed clearing agent.
Registering for road use
Machines used on public roads must be registered and plated with the national vehicle registration authority. Your dealer or a local clearing agent can usually arrange this.
General guidance only. Rules change, so confirm with the official bodies or your clearing agent before you buy. Last checked October 2026.
